Experience:
Ian Bevan spent much of his undergraduate career at San Diego State University studying politics and sustainability. In 2005, Ian decided it was time to get involved on campus. He discovered the Enviro-Business Society (e3), a start-up student organization advocating ecology, ethics, and economics. Ian was elected president of e3 in the spring of 2005, which at the time was the only environmental student organization on campus.
In his two terms as president of e3, membership exploded from 30 to over 300 members as noted by journalist Sherry Saavedra in the San Diego Union Tribune. During that year, Ian also orchestrated several high-level events including the Generation Green Knowledge Summit, Generation Green Earth Week 2006 and others. By the end of his two-term presidency, e3 was the fastest growing organization at SDSU and held the most events on campus. Such successes would eventually bring about sustainable growth with regards to membership and fundraising for e3.
Ian worked diligently to help cultivate the green movement across campus. He worked with and helped develop the “Green Group” at SDSU. This dynamic group of administrators, students, faculty and staff was critical in bringing all of the key players on campus together in an informal setting to learn about each other’s efforts and to work together as partners in a variety of projects thereafter. One example includes the creation of an SDSU Senate Committee for Sustainability. After helping to build a more robust “green infrastructure” on campus, Ian set his sights on creating similar infrastructure within SDSU’s student union.
In 2007, the president of Associated Students (AS), urged Ian to become the first Green Commissioner in AS. Ian began by recommending AS facility changes, most of which were eco-efficiencies. He was co-chair the Green Love Committee, which is a well-funded student committee within AS. With the student body’s support, this committee brought about a $250,000 referendum for sustainable projects on campus along with many other notable achievements. Ian was featured on USA television’s “Character Road Trip” to highlight the extraordinary successes taking place at SDSU and to inspire others to do so across the country. That year Ian also taught a workshop at the California Sustainable Student Coalition (CSSC) entitled “Building Green Infrastructure On Campus”.
During Ian’s final semester at SDSU in 2008, he decided to work with the Physical Plant to increase recycling outdoors. Ian spent the summer prior collecting data on recycling at SDSU. Out of the hundreds of waste receptacles outdoors on campus, his findings revealed that there was a 13:1 ratio of trash to recycling containers. Ian’s solution included taking the excess trash containers and retrofitting those into recycling containers, which created no waste and was the least costly option for SDSU. Ian received much accolades for his work at SDSU including the President’s Top 25 Award from SDSU’s President Stephen Weber and the President’s Leadership Award from Associated Students. His outdoor waste management solution has now almost been fully implemented at SDSU.
Post Graduation
Ian graduated from SDSU in 2008 and became a Recycling Specialist for the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department. He was also accepted into Presidio
Graduate School’s world renowned Sustainable Business Management Masters Program. Ian is now the founding director of Green Tower Sustainability and hopes to enable student organizations with environmental emphasis to maximize their impact. Ian has conducted many workshops to help students all across California and is currently consulting several student organizations. Ian hopes to start a green business upon getting his MBA at Presidio Graduate School.
