About Tara Kelly

Tara Kelly

GTS Mentor

“The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.”

-John Maxwell

Experience:

Tara became involved with the Enviro-Business Society (e3), a non-profit, environmental student org at SDSU in the fall of 2007.  The next spring Tara became an e3 exec, which truly changed her life.  She has met the most amazing friends in e3, and has shared such meaningful ideas, memories, inspiration and laughs with these like-minded people.  They have collectively changed SDSU, starting a weekly farmers’ market, banning trans fat and Styrofoam, creating a bike lane (will be completed August 2010), hosted the largest free event in school history (Rebelution concert April 22nd, 2008), just to name a few accomplishments.  Tara went on to become the CEO of e3, and is now the Sustainability Commissioner and Chair of the Green Love Advisory Board of the Associated Students. She will continue to stay involved with e3, and will forever cherish her memories with her student org.

Tara’s Background

Tara was born and raised in Santa Cruz, CA, where being as sustainable as possible was the life style she was used to.  It wasn’t until she moved to San Diego and became involved with e3 that she saw how unsustainable our society is and how we desperately need to change our ways. Knowing that we have exceeded many scientists’ predictions for parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere is a frightening thought, not because she thinks our planet earth is going to be destroyed, but because we are on track to completely destroy our precious wildlife, nature and ourselves.  The people of the world will never agree on something, but being sustainable isn’t a political issue, and everyone needs to be educated about how sustainability relates to every facet of life.  Tara believes that student orgs is a great stepping stone in this journey, and is excited to see GTS help orgs get other students involved, so they can educate and inspire others as well.

Words of Wisdom:

John Maxwell said “the pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.”  After watching student orgs transform campuses, Tara believes that the students in student organizations are the ones on campuses who are adjusting the sails, stepping up and making an immeasurable difference.  Giving students the resources to efficiently run an org is vital to the success of not only org, but the campus as a whole.
